Nizar Hassan (born in 1960) in the
village of Al Mashhad, Nazareth District, is an independent Palestinian
director, producer, author and screenwriter.
Biography
Influenced since his childhood by
the reality of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, since he began his cinematic
career in 1990, he focused during his career in documentary film and presented
it in a new style, where he took the highlighting of photographic tools as an
essential factor in his cinematic language. His works have won Arab and
international admiration at festivals such as Leipzig, Edva, Marseille, the Arab
World Festival and Ismailia.
His professional career
He practiced cinema without
education. He worked as an assistant in foreign films related to the reality of
Palestine for two years, then began directing promotional films for the
“Charity Films” Foundation in East Jerusalem, which deals with Palestinian
cinematic folklore.
His first work in Palestinian cinema
was the movie “Independence” in 1994. After that, the movie “Yasmine” in 1996,
which was its entrance to European festivals, was chosen as a film with a new
cinematic style at the “Documenta” festival that year, which was held in
Berlin, and it was the first Palestinian and Arab film to be seen. Him as well
and displays under this framework.
As for the Arab world, the movie
Ostoura, which was shown at the 1998 “September” festival in Beirut, was its
entrance to the Arab world.
