Omar Izzat Sharif Kattaneh ( October 9, 1957 - ) is a Palestinian politician and university professor . He was born and raised in the Palestinian city of Tulkarm . He served as Minister of the Palestinian Energy and Natural Resources Authority from December 17, 2006 until January 10, 2017. [ 

His upbringing and education

Omar Izzat Sharif Kattaneh was born in one of the old neighborhoods in the center of Tulkarm on October 9 , 1957. He is the brother of the Palestinian politician Rima Kattaneh .  His father, Izzat Kattaneh, was a leader in the Palestinian National Liberation League in Tulkarm and the director of the Tulkarm Post Office before the 1967 Six- Day War . 

Omar holds a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Syracuse University in New York State , USA , and a PhD in Electrical Engineering from New York Polytechnic University in the USA . 

His professional life

Since 1989, he has worked as a professor and university lecturer of electrical engineering at Birzeit University , and in 1993 he became head of the electrical engineering department at the university and continued as head of the department until 1995.

On January 2, 1995, Palestinian President Yasser Arafat issued a decision appointing him as Director General of the Palestinian Energy Authority ,  and on April 1, 2003 , Palestinian President Yasser Arafat appointed him as Assistant Undersecretary of the Palestinian Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources . 

On December 17, 2006, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas appointed him as Minister of the Palestinian Energy and Natural Resources Authority ,  where he continued in this position until January 10 , 2017.  Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had also appointed him as Chairman of the Palestinian Electricity Regulatory Council from February 15, 2010 until December 31, 2012.

On April 30, 2013, he assumed the presidency of the Arab Ministerial Council for Electricity of the League of Arab States in its tenth session, [  and continued to do so until the eleventh session of the Council was held on June 9 , 2015.
