Mai Salem Hanna Al-Kaila (born April
8, 1955 in Jerusalem) is a Palestinian physician, diplomat and politician, and
the first woman to hold the position of Minister of Health in Palestine within
the government of Muhammad Shtayyeh. She holds a PhD in Public Health and
Health Administration. In her capacity as Minister of Health, she chairs the
Palestinian Medical Council.
Education and educational attainment
Mai Salem Hanna Al-Kaila was born in
the city of Jerusalem on April 8, 1955. She received her basic and preparatory
education in the schools of the town of Birzeit, and her secondary education in
the Ahliya College in Ramallah. She studied nursing at Al-Mutalaa Hospital in
Jerusalem. She studied medicine at the University of Granada in Spain, where
she obtained a bachelor's degree, then specialized in obstetrics and
gynecology, and obtained a master's degree from the University of California,
San Francisco, in the United States. She holds a PhD in Public Health and
Epidemiology from the University of Chile.
practical life
Alkaila worked as a resident
physician at the Palestine Red Crescent Hospital in Jerusalem in the obstetrics
and gynecology program. Mai Al-Kaila graduated in jobs and positions, as she
worked as a lecturer at Al-Quds University in the Department of Public Health,
and at the Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees as head of the
motherhood and childhood program.
In 1994, Mai Alkaila was appointed
to the Palestinian delegation to participate in the Fourth International
Conference on Women in Beijing, China, which was held in 1995.
Al-Kaila was appointed ambassador of
the State of Palestine to Chile on October 31, 2005, and continued until her
appointment as ambassador of the State of Palestine to Italy on October 1,
2013. On December 4, 2016, she won the elections of the Fatah Movement's
Revolutionary Council, which was held during the movement's seventh conference,
and became a member of it.
On April 13, 2019, Al-Kaila was
sworn in before Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas as Minister of Health within
the government of Muhammad Shtayyeh.
Achievements and Awards

In 2017, May Al Kaila was awarded a
Gold Medal from the Norman Academy in cooperation with the Italian Air Force;This is due to its activity and defense of Palestinian human rights.
On June 7, 2022, Italian President
Sergio Mattarella awarded her the Grand Star of Italy in appreciation of her
great efforts in strengthening Italian-Palestinian relations, during the
Italian National Day celebration in Ramallah, which was organized by the
Italian Consulate General.
