Ahmed Yousef Al-Saftawy, a surgeon
living in Poland of Palestinian origin from Gaza City, is considered one of the
most famous surgeons who contributed to the first successful arm transplant in
Poland and the third in Europe.

Born in Doha - Qatar, in 1976, after
completing his studies, he moved to Poland for university studies. He studied
medicine since 1994 in Poland, then completed his specialization in general
surgery, then obtained a doctorate in hand surgery, specializing in limb
transplantation, especially the upper ones. He was among the The medical team
that performed the first arm transplant for a Polish soldier whose hands were
amputated as a result of an explosion. The donor of the arms was a Polish woman
who donated them after her death. This operation is considered the first
successful arm transplant in Poland and the third in Europe. Dr. El-Saftawy and
the medical team he works with have performed eight hand transplants of this
type so far.

Honoring
The Polish President awarded Dr.
Ahmed Yousef El-Saftawy the Polish Silver Medal of Honor for his excellence in
multi-tissue organ transplantation and reconstructive surgery in February 2014.
