Ibtisam Azem was born in the city of Taybeh in the Triangle, inside the Green Line. She studied at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. She completed her master's studies at the University of Freiburg in Germany in German and English literature and Islamic studies. She lives in New York and is married to the Iraqi novelist Sinan Antoon.

She works for the New Arab newspaper from New York. She previously worked as a journalist and editor for the Arabic section of the German Deutsche Welle channel. She is a member of the editorial board for several sites, including Qantara, Al-Akhbar, Jadaliyya and Al-Jazeera Net. She writes articles and short stories.
