Wael Hallaq (born in 1955 AD) is a researcher of Palestinian origin, Canadian nationality, Christian of religion, specializing in law and the history of Islamic thought. He works as a professor of social sciences at Columbia University - Department of Middle Eastern Studies. After obtaining a Ph.D. from the University of Washington, Hallak joined the Institute of Islamic Studies at McGill University and worked as an assistant professor of Islamic law in 1985 AD. He obtained a professorship in 1994 AD. Hallaq is a well-informed author and lecturer who has made many contributions to the field of Islamic studies. His works have been translated into several languages, including Hebrew, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese and Turkish. The Royal Center for Research and Islamic Studies (Jordan) counted him in a book published in 2009 as one of the “500 most influential Muslim figures in the world.”
