Information

Ahmed Ali Hussein Odeh is a Palestinian novelist and writer of stories and screenplays. He is considered one of the pioneers of the literary and cultural movement in Jordan , and one of the founders of the Jordanian Writers Association . He is also one of the first writers of television series in the white Jordanian dialect.

His upbringing and education

He was born in the village of Athnaba, Ramla district , in 1948, before his family took refuge in Ain al-Sultan camp. He finished his primary and preparatory education in Ain al-Sultan camp boys’ school, and completed secondary school in Aqabat Jabr camp secondary school for boys, which is a camp located southwest of the city of Jericho , on Jerusalem Road , and obtained a secondary school certificate in 1963, after which he joined the Teachers’ Preparation Institute and obtained an educational qualification diploma equivalent to a community college diploma in 1965, after which he became a teacher in the schools of the Jerusalem Governorate , until he was displaced with his family following the June War to Amman , and he continued his work as a teacher in Oman until he was retired in 1988, where he then devoted himself to dramatic writing.

Literary life

He is a member of the Arab Writers Union and is considered one of the local stories who shined in the sixties and early seventies. He began writing novels specifically in the sixties, but the first thing he published was a short story in the early seventies.

He published his first collection (When Crying is No Use) in 1973, then he waited a long time before submitting his second collection (Thyme of the Hill) to the Jordanian Writers Association, which published it. His third collection (The Turn) was published in 1980.

These stories have a special flavor that is different from the prevailing ones, with a format drawn from the atmosphere of the Palestinian camp in exile, and a vision that moves away from highlighting the heroic dimension in camp life towards emphasizing the alienated human dimension, even though it often succeeds in creating a state of rebellion and rejection among its reader against this alienation. And oppression in the camp community.

Most of his collections of stories and novels concerned the Palestinian cause, starting from the camp and then through the dream of returning to the land through struggle and liberation. His collection of short stories and novels were banned from publication in some Arab countries because of the political and societal criticism they contain regarding the issue.

He generally presented selected Palestinian and Arab models in his collections. He knew how to present it to the reader by adding many details and shades, which gave it the elements of real life and honesty. All of this with a superior ability capable of shaping, communicating, and inspiring with tools that he has complete control over, and he knew how to use them through the interweaving of the past with the present, with the merging of events and feelings, and the intertwining of present events with the past. In highlighting the relationships of his characters to each other, we notice that each character in his stories and novels symbolizes a situation and reality in his life.

His death

He died in Jordan on Saturday, April 9, 2016 , after suffering a heart attack, after which he was transferred to the Medical City Center in Amman, where he remained in intensive care and died hours later. The news of his death was announced immediately. His body was buried on April 10 in Amman , and was buried in Sahab cemetery based on his recommendation. The Jordanian Writers Association and the Arab Writers Union described him in Arab newspapers as one of their members, and many writers and poets in Jordanian and Arab newspapers.
