Dr. Joseph W. Meri ( born 1969 ) is a research professor of medieval Islamic history , Islamic culture , and interfaith relations and a scholar of the history of Jewish communities in the Middle East.

He is currently a member and special researcher at the Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought (Amman, Jordan), sponsored by the Hashemite family. Born in Chicago in 1969 , he comes from a Jerusalemite family. He received his BA (cum laude) from the University of California, Berkeley in 1992 , his MA from the State University of New York in 1995, and his PhD from the University of Oxford (Wolfson College) in 1999. 

He has published numerous articles and books on various aspects of Islamic history, Islamic civilization, and worship in Islam and Judaism. From 2013 to 2014 , he was a visiting professor of Islamic studies at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich . He was a Fellow of St Edmund's College, Cambridge, and a Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Islamic Studies, University of Cambridge.
