Like many Palestinian painters, Nabil Shehadeh has led a peripatetic life, partly through choice and partly through necessity. Born in Jerusalem in 1949, he spent his first eleven years there until the family moved to Amman in 1961.
In 1973 he went to London to study fine art, gaining a Diploma in Fine Arts and Design at Chelsea School of Art and Design in 1975 and a Diploma in Fine Arts from Hammersmith School of Art in 1978. He now lives and works in Switzerland. Shehadeh is a painter, working in acrylics, oils and mixed media.
He works chiefly with line and space and through them creates feelings of tension, harmony and movement.
The artist states: ´My work has always been pivoting on the concept of the dot and the line. The dot and the line can work in conjunction with each other - their relationship regarding void and surface - utilising them with media such as drawing, colouring, installation and multimedia. Through my art I try to discover and be part of human thought, man´s existence and his relationship with the environment.´ Nabil Shehadeh has exhibited in Jordan (Jordan National Art Gallery, Darat Al Funun Art Centre), Switzerland and several other countries.
He has received many awards, including winner of the Artist of the Amman Municipality in 1981 and the Traviso Award in Corolla d´Oro, Italy in 1989. Swiss critic Airus Bellinili wrote: ´An onlooker at Shehadeh´s works can only be fascinated at the torn synthesis and colour tension of his paintings, they reveal a sentimental drive that discovers space and launches it into vaster horizons.
There is deep meditation in his paintings.´ Nabil Shehadeh was shortlisted for the Visiting Arts/Delfina Annual Fellowship in 2001 on the nomination of Ali Fawaz Maher, Director of the Darat Al Funun - Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation in Amman, Jordan.
