Information
Hassan Al-Batal (born on July 14, 1944 in Tira Haifa, died on
December 8, 2021 in Ramallah) is a Palestinian writer and journalist. He had
worked on Radio Palestine from Baghdad and on the editorial board of the
“Palestine Al-Thawra” magazine, which spoke on behalf of the Palestine
Liberation Organization, and in The Palestinian Al-Ayyam newspaper, in which he
used to write the column “The End of the Day.”
His upbringing and education
Alam was born in 1944 in Tira Haifa, and immigrated with his
family to Syria in the Nakba of 1948. He received his school and university
education in Damascus, and in 1968 he obtained a master’s degree from its
university in geological geography.
His political and journalistic activities
He joined the Fatah movement, left Damascus after the Corrective
Movement to Baghdad and worked between 1972 and 1974 as an editor on the
Palestine Liberation Organization radio that was broadcasting there, then he
was expelled due to the political dispute with Iraq at the time over the PLO’s interim
program, then he joined the editorial board of Palestine Al-Thawra magazine in
Beirut Habaq edited Arab Affairs, then Enemy Affairs. He continued working in
the magazine after leaving Beirut and moved with it to Nicosia, where he took
over its editorial management and wrote the “Conflict Issues” column. He
returned to Palestine after the Oslo agreement and worked, starting in 1995, on
the editorial board of Al-Ayyam newspaper, which is published In Ramallah,
where he continued to write his daily column, and then the semi-daily column,
"The Ends of the Day".
His articles were collected in four volumes published by the
“Dar Al-Daqmeya” in Ramallah, and they bore the following titles: “As Time
Walks You”, “The Thing’s Place If It Shows Me”, “The Bewilderment of the Boy
Bahaa”, and “They Left and They Left”.

He died in Ramallah on December 8, 2021 AD, corresponding to
Jumada Al-Awwal 4, 1443 AH, and was buried in its cemetery in the presence of a
wide official and popular presence.

Awards and honors
In 1988 he won the Palestine Prize for the article.
In 2015, he won the Arab Journalists Union Medal.
In 2018, Hassan Al-Batal was chosen as the Cultural Personality
of the Year in the Palestinian Authority.
On December 10, 2021, after his death, the President of the
Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, awarded him the Medal of Culture,
Science, and Arts, “Level of Creativity,” in recognition of his journalistic
contributions and his prominent role in the Palestinian media and Palestine
Al-Thawra magazine.
