Salim Qabain (1870 - 1951) is a Palestinian teacher, journalist , writer , historian , and translator [ 1] . He is considered one of the most important Palestinian and Arab literary figures, especially in the field of translation. He is one of the first Arab translators to introduce the Arab reader to Russian literature [2] . He was called “the dean of Russian translators.”
His life
Salim Qabain was born in 1870 in the city of Nazareth in Palestine . He completed his studies at the Russian School in the city of Nazareth. After graduating from the university, he worked in the teaching profession. He was known for his intense love of writing and literature, as he used to publish his comments on what he read in the university magazine , which was founded by Farah Antoun. in Alexandria . He joined the Arab opposition movement against the Ottomans and was forced to flee and seek refuge in Egypt in 1897 as a result of the threat. He taught the Arabic language in a number of institutes and schools in Egypt, and continued to publish, and his research was published in Al-Mokattam, Al-Muayyad , and Al-Mahrousa newspapers . [3] [4] He published a number of newspapers in Cairo , including Al-Isboa 1900, Bride of the Nile 1903, and Al-Ikhaa 1924. He also published a series of novels, the first issue of which was published in 1909. Selim would make a trip every year and publish his thoughts and observations on this trip upon his return.
Selim is considered one of the figures who introduced the Arab reader to major Russian writers such as Maxim Gorky, Tolstoy , Pushkin and others through his translation of many of their books, his analysis of this literature, and the connection of the Arab reader with it. He is one of the Arab writers who lived through the emergence of the Bahá'í Faith and wrote about it, summarizing what he knew of its principles and what he experienced of the history of some of its notables in his book “Abdul-Bahá and the Bahá'í Faith,” which was published in 1922 by Al-Omran Press in Egypt. In addition to introducing the Baha'i faith and its principles, his book included a summary of the history of its Messenger and some of its notables, especially an explanation of the biography of Ibn Baha'u'llah , the Most Guided and Spiritual Leader of the Baha'is after him , Abdul-Baha Abbas, summarizing his life in Palestine and his relationship with its people. The book also includes a description of Abdul-Baha’s funeral , the fortieth anniversary of his death, and the poems and sermons delivered on these two occasions by many Palestinian writers, notables, and others.
Selim also took care of the affairs of the Orthodox Arabs who suffered from the oppression and oppression of Greece and wanted to be independent from them and manage their affairs on their own. He established charitable societies for his sect that played noble roles. Because of his Arab fanaticism, the Greeks forced him to resign from teaching and charitable work. He founded the Brotherhood Press and called for Arabs and Christians to unite against the strange foreigner.
Selim died in 1951 in Cairo from complications of diabetes .
