Salim Arafat Ibrahim Al-Mobaid (June 1, 1943 – February 28, 2024) is a Palestinian historian and writer , and is known by some sources as the “Historian of the Gaza Strip.”  He is considered one of the most prominent contemporary Palestinian and Arab historians. 

His biography

Salim Arafat Al-Mobaid was born on June 1, 1943 in the Shuja'iyya neighborhood of Gaza City . He received his preparatory education at Shuja'iyya School and completed his secondary education at Palestine School and Jaffa School in 1961. He obtained a BA in Geography from Ain Shams University in 1965, and a postgraduate diploma from the same university in 1966. 

Al-Mobaid worked as a teacher at Jaffa Secondary School in 1965, then as principal of Al-Karmel Secondary School from 1976 to 1979, then as an inspector of social studies in the Gaza Strip . In 1990, he worked as a part-time lecturer at the Islamic University until 1995. He was the first founder of the Palestinian National Library Authority and its Secretary-General, and he also contributed to the establishment of the Palestinian Planning Center and the Historical Research Center. 

He died on February 28, 2024 in Gaza City at the age of 80, as the Palestinian Ministry of Culture mourned him. Atef Abu Saif explained that “Al-Mobaid’s departure represents a loss for Palestinian culture, which he enriched with dozens of books that dealt with the history of Palestine in different stages, wrote about its heritage and authenticity, and documented the lives of its people.”

He wrote many valuable books, the most important of which are:

Salim Al-Mobaid also prepared the book “Ismail Ashour: Visual Artist and Cartoonist” which included Ismail Ashour’s paintings and was published by the General Administration of Literature.
