Born in Al-aal - Golan Heights in Syria in 1956; finished his high school in Damascus; joined Damascus University, graduating in 1978 in English language and literature; MA from the same university in 1984; PhD in 1989 from Aston University - Birmingham, England; returned to Damascus, worked as an English teacher in al-Baath University (1990 - 1992).
