Emily Jacir was born in 1970 and arrived to New York in 1998. She has had solo exhibitions at the University Gallery in Sewanee, TN (2000) and at SPACES in Cleveland, OH (1999) and her work has been featured in exhibitions at the Moderna Gallerja in Ljubljana, Slovenia (2000), at the Whitney Independent Open Studios, NY (1999), at the Contemporary Art Center of Fort Worth, TX (1997), and at YYZ Artists Outlet in Toronto, Canada (1996).

 

Emily Jacir, originally from Bethlehem, grew up in Saudi Arabia, went to high school in Roma, Italy (and returned for part of college), received her B.F.A.(Texas) and M.F.A.(Tennessee) in America and then spent several years on the move living in Texas, Palestine, Colorado, France, and New York. She currently lives and works between Ramallah and New York City.

 

Emily has shown extensively throughout Europe, the Americas and the Middle East. Her solo exhibitions in 2003 include Debs& Co, NY; Los Angeles International Art Biennial, Frumkin/Duval Gallery, Santa Monica,CA; and the O-K Center for Contemporary Art in Linz, Austria. Jacir will be featured at the 8th International Istanbul Biennial in September 2003.

She was awarded the 1995 Kimbrough Award Fund from The Dallas Museum of Art and a 2002 grant from the Barbara Deming Memorial Fund for Women. She was an artist-in-residence at The Townhouse Gallery in Cairo, Egypt, 2003; Anadiel Gallery, Jerusalem, Palestine, 2002; A.M. Qattan Center in Ramallah, Palestine, 2002; Lower Manhattan Cultural Council's World Views in the World Trade Center in 2000; P.S.1 National Studio Program, 2001; Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris, France, 1998; and Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado,1996. Jacir participated in the Whitney Museum of American Art's Independent Study Program in 1998-99.
