Othman Khaled Abdul Latif Abu Jahjouh (16 April 1951 – 22 December 2009) was a Palestinian writer and novelist. He had served as the director of a public school in the Palestinian Ministry of Education for 14 years and had been administratively detained by the Israeli army, working to resist the policy of ignorance that Israel was trying to impose on the Palestinian people.

Life

Born in Khan Younis on 16 April 1951, his father, Khalid Abdul Latif Abu Jahjouh, was martyred during the Khan Younis massacre[] carried out by the Israeli army on 12 November 1956 against Palestinian refugees in Khan Younis camp in the southern Gaza Strip, which killed more than 250 Palestinians, and originates from the village of al-Joura in Ashkelon. It had been occupied by Israel on November 5, 1948.  Othman had a diploma of teachers in sociology and lived in the Al-Amal neighborhood of Khan Younis and was married to Mrs. Suad Ahmad Hijazi, who worked in UNRWA schools.

He was a member of the elected General Secretariat and the administrative body of the Palestinian Writers' Union, the founder and director of the Literary Creativity Forum in Khan Younis Governorate, the coordinator of the affairs of the Writers' Union in the southern Gaza governorates, the director of a school in the Palestinian Ministry of Education, a cultural advisor to the Association for Culture and Free Thought, the managing editor of the cultural magazine Tabel issued in 1994, and the director of the annual art exhibition of the Palestinian Ministry of Education.

 

Compositions

He has published a number of publications in a variety of fields, including in fiction: The Novel "Some of the Adoration"[] and The Novel "The Bread of the Sea"] published by the Association for Culture and Free Thought. In his fiction works, he has published several collections of stories from the Union of Palestinian Writers, including (The Sea Tells a Tale of Love), (Festival in the Eggplant Market), (Bright Sunset), (The Lights and the Fly), (Biography of the Constraint and the Pen). He has also published theatrical writings, including The Wanted Donkey, The Land of Canaan, and The Night of Fishing by Sea. He has also published a book (Critical Approaches to the Literature of Abdullah Tayeh and a collection of stories (The Pain of the Rose).

 

Death

He died on December 22, 2009, corresponding to 6 Muharram 1431 AH, due to the blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip, where he could not travel abroad to complete his treatment, at the age of 58.
