Information
Born in Bethlehem in 1971, Rania attended St. Joseph’s School; and since her teenage years she has been strongly committed to community service. Her volunteer work intensified during the first Intifada, when she was heavily involved in dealing with cases of human rights violations. This experience led her to pursue a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Bethlehem University.
Before assuming her current position as director of Yabous Productions - a Palestinian cultural organisation in the heart of Jerusalem - Rania worked for five years as an administrative assistant at Riwaq Centre for Architectural Conservation. In 1995, she was the director of the Bethlehem International Festival, a position that prepared her to assume the responsibility for Yabous Productions. Rania took the job in 1998 while Yabous Productions was still in its infancy, and with the support of the board of trustees and dedicated staff, she was able to transform Yabous into one of the leading cultural organisations in Jerusalem.
Through Rania’s efforts, Yabous has made a significant contribution to reviving cultural life in Jerusalem, especially through the annual Jerusalem Festival and the Concert Seasons programme. Her competence and professionalism have gained trust and credibility for Yabous Productions both here and abroad and have led to her appointment in 2007 as a member of the national and executive committees of Al Quds - the Capital of Arab Culture - 2009 and the head of the events committee.
Her most challenging project thus far is the establishment of the Yabous Cultural Centre that is slated to be inaugurated in Jerusalem in the spring of 2009. The centre will be the first and largest to be built in the city since its illegal occupation by the Israelis in 1967.
Continuing her commitment to voluntary community service, Rania also serves as a member of the board of trustees of several organisations and networks, both Palestinian and international, and is a member of the executive committee of PACBI - Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel.
